Go back and read Tom Arah’s review of MX 2004 in the November 2003 issue of PC Pro and you will find phrases such as ‘The shift from Dreamweaver MX to Dreamweaver MX 2004 may not provide the same quantum leap in features and ease of use as the move to MX’ and ‘this release … consolidates the MX advances rather than overhauling them’.
I’m also excited at the prospect of better-quality tools and that Adobe might rekindle development in a Macromedia toolset that has tended to stagnate over the past few years. This bodes well for the stability of future Adobe tools, and frankly recent versions of Macromedia products such as Dreamweaver could do with an injection of stability. The company is committed to using Adam and Eve2 (visit for details) for the human interfaces of future products, and has made them open source. I’m also enthusiastic because lately Adobe has been doing some great stuff with the quality and stability of its product set. Hey, and that other company could even be Microsoft. I’m hopeful that the surplus products will be sold off to another company that can devote the money and resources needed to make them market leaders. So my initial sadness has been countered with real enthusiasm.
As you can see, there have always been three people in this marriage. This is exactly what happened in 1994: Aldus used to own a product called FreeHand, but when Adobe bought Aldus, FreeHand was sold to Macromedia. But mergers do not always result in products being chopped, the reason being that they are valuable commodities and selling off such spare products is often a good way to finance a major buyout. A couple of years after Adobe bought Aldus in 1994, it killed off the latter’s excellent PhotoStyler product because it clashed with Adobe’s own Photoshop. I was also sad at first that some of my favourite products might disappear. But although to a certain extent that’s still true, I’m not sure we have seen much real innovation from Macromedia recently anyway.

As you may have read in the news pages of last month’s PC Pro, this wasn’t my first reaction: my initial thought was that we would end up with less competition, and hence less innovation, in the creative software market.
